There have been 634 cases of influenza that led to hospitalization through January 4 in Clark County compared to the 11 deaths and 260 hospitalizations in the same time period past year, district officials said.
The Department of Health Services says a child has died from influenza, the first pediatric flu-related death reported in Wisconsin for the 2019-2020 season.
The victim had moved to Wisconsin in the last two months, the department says.
This includes the county's first child death, numerous other deaths were senior citizens, an especially vulnerable population. "The people who are at most risk of complication from the flu are at the extremes of the age groups", along with people with certain chronic medical conditions, he said. The traditional flu season runs through May. 97 of them were admitted to the intensive care unit.
"Levels of outpatient [influenza-like illness] remain elevated; however, hospitalization rates and percent of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza remain low", the CDC report reads.
