Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Brexit deal cleared its final hurdles in Parliament, bringing the crisis that paralysed United Kingdom politics since the country voted to leave the European Union nearly four years ago to a close.
His 80-seat majority in the elected House of Commons meant he could sweep aside objections from pro-EU politicians in the upper chamber of Parliament, the Lords, and break the deadlock that cost his predecessor, Theresa May, her job previous year.
Wednesday saw the House of Commons overturn all the changes the unelected Lords made earlier to the Brexit bill.
Last month, the House of Commons passed his Brexit bill, where he added a clause to rule out any extension beyond December 31, 2020. The upper chamber had been expected to uphold the decision by the House of Commons, whose members are elected.
The Queen's formal approval of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill is expected in the coming days while the European Parliament will hold its consent vote on January 29.
It also paves the way for a transition phase until Dec 31, in which UK-EU ties will remain largely the same while both sides try to reach agreement on a new trading and security partnership.
The promise was made in 2018 by former British Prime Minister Theresa May, but it was removed from the Brexit legislation after Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservatives won a big parliamentary majority in an election last month.

"We are at the end of a very long road", said Martin Callanan, a Brexit minister in the Lords.
The overwhelming rejection of the Lords' changes signifies the power that Boris Johnson now wields in the Commons, thanks to the hefty majority he won in last month's snap election.
Despite Johnson's repeated promise to "get Brexit done" on January 31, the day of departure only marks the start of the country's exit from the EU.
The ratification process will be completed over the next week in time for the 31 January deadline. Having recently rejected a request from Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon for the country's devolved parliament to get the ball rolling on a second independence referendum, Boris Johnson knows this is an issue that won't go away.
The EU will not tolerate any "backsliding" on the Northern Ireland part of the Brexit deal, a senior official has warned.
"Mr Johnson's deal still needs to be ratified by the European Parliament ahead of Brexit day". Britain and the European Union will then launch into negotiations on their future ties, racing to strike new relationships for trade, security and a host of other areas by the end of 2020. Labour, Liberal Democrat and independent crossbench peers ignored repeated ministerial warnings not to amend the Bill, insisting their objection was not to stop Brexit but to ensure the legislation was better drafted.
