In his speech at Stanford University's Hoover Institute, Pompeo made no mention of the threat of imminent attacks planned by Soleimani.
Pressed on whether there was a piece of intelligence that showed Martyr Suleimani wanted to attack United States embassies, Mr. Esper said: "I didn't see one with regard to four embassies". Levin said he is "entirely unconvinced" an imminent threat necessitated Soleimani's death. "And that certainly was the position of the Obama when it droned leaders of terrorist organizations", Barr added.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that the assassination of Qassem Soleimani was part of a "bigger strategy" to deter Iran and other US rivals, including Russian Federation and China, in what marked a significant departure from Washington's original account. He has also cited what he said was the general's central role in ordering a militia to attack a base in Iraq that houses US troops and subsequently storm the American embassy in Baghdad, in the days before Soleimani was killed.
"What I'm saying is I share the president's view that probably-my expectation was they were going to go after our embassies", Esper added. "Congress must repeal both the 2001 and 2002 AUMFs", he tweeted last week. "The American people must be heard in matters of war".
