Htet, 21, announced she is a lesbian during a pre-competition interview, saying she wants to use the pageant to help homosexuals in Burma gain acceptance.
It took her some time to accept it, and she told her parents five years ago.
"The hard thing is that in Burma, LGBTQ people are not accepted", Htet continued.
"And I think that it is time, that it stops today", Tunzi said during her closing statement, moments before she was announced victor. The world is celebrating a new Miss Universe, after the gorgeous lady wowed judges with her talent and beauty during the ceremony.
As for the new Miss Universe, time will tell what the future will hold for her over the upcoming year. The 26-year-old looked stunned when she beat first runner-up Miss Puerto Rico, Madison Anderson, 24, whose name was announced after fan favorite Miss Mexico, Sofia Aragon, 25.

Although Htet has been out to those around her for some time, and has been in a relationship with the famous Burmese singer Gae Gae for three years, she said telling her family she was a lesbian was hard. "But later, when they found out more about the LGBTQ community, they started to accept me", she added. "A majority of people in Myanmar are not accepting of this", the contestant told Glamour.
Gazini Ganados, the country's bet at the Miss Universe this year walked tall and proud during the pageant's preliminary rounds, as she tried to secure a spot in the finals.
According to the Miss Universe official website, Zozibini is a "passionate activist" who is "engaged in the fight against gender based violence".
