Fiji miss out on the Cup quarter-finals of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens for the first time in HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series history as Australia, New Zealand and South Africa finish with three wins from three.
Olympic champions Fiji failed to make the quarter-finals of the Dubai Sevens for the first time on Friday, agonisingly missing out on points difference in their pool.
The Fijians had needed to beat France by 18 points in their final pool match but fell short, eventually winning 24-14.
As a result, the best Fiji can hope for is a ninth-place finish and a maximum of eight series points, providing they beat Canada tomorrow. New Zealand play United States of America while Australia is up against Samoa in other Cup quarters showdown.
It was a frustrating night at the office for New Zealand in the opening leg of the 2019-20 world series, having earlier topped their pool by romping past Wales, Canada and eventual semifinalists Samoa.

In the women's competition, the Black Ferns Sevens are also through to the Cup quarter-finals as the second seed from Pool C and will face Fiji an hour earlier at 7:30pm. South Africa scored two first-half tries then hung on to beat Argentina 12-5 in the quarterfinals, while New Zealand beat England 19-12 in the semifinals with a last-minute try by Salesi Rayasi.
While Fiji and Canada, as the two best third-placed teams, to meet in the ninth place play-off, the 11th place play-off will be contested by the other teams to finish third in their pools, Ireland and Spain.
The US preceded that loss by defeating Scotland 31-21 and finished second in the standings.
Today's other Pool A matches saw Fiji overcome France 24-14 and Japan lose 41-5 to France and 33-7 to Argentina.
