House impeachment investigators met in private Saturday with a White House budget official as the historic inquiry produces new testimony offering direct insight of President Trump's actions toward Ukraine.
Holmes' statement appears to contradict Sondland's previous sworn testimony about his interactions with Trump, in which he did not mention his July 26 phone call with the president.
In a disclosure that drew the most attention in the first public hearing last week, acting ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor pointed to Trump's keen interest in getting the eastern European ally to investigate Biden and reiterated his understanding that $391 million in US security aid was withheld from Kiev unless it cooperated.
Questions over that trade-off - military aid and a coveted White House visit for Ukraine's president in exchange for the investigations - are central to the impeachment inquiry.
Trump's call is at the heart of the Democratic-led inquiry into whether the Republican president misused U.S. foreign policy to undermine former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, one of his potential opponents in the 2020 election. Trump was echoing Letsenko and his corrupt compatriots, angry at Yovanovitch's overturning of their dominance by insisting upon the rule of law, but he might well have been reacting to how thoroughly her testimony indicted his own behavior. She started off in Somalia, how did that go?
Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, along with Giuliani's clients Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas, joined in the smears against Ambassador Yovanovitch and worked to force her recall.
Ken Starr, who served as special prosecutor during president Bill Clinton's impeachment, said on Fox News that Mr Trump's tweet showed "extraordinarily poor judgement". He told reporters he had watched part of the impeachment hearing and considered it "a disgrace". What did David Holmes say?
Mr Trump suggested that Ms Yovanovitch's earlier work as a U.S. diplomat in Somalia was linked to the country's decades of catastrophic instability.
While some, including Trump himself, have begun to question Sondland's knowledge of events, Morrison told House investigators the ambassador "related to me he was acting - he was discussing these matters with the President".
Following the call, according to Taylor, Holmes asked Sondland what Trump thought about Ukraine, and Sondland said that Trump cared more about the investigations of Biden.
According to a copy of his opening statement obtained by CBS News, Mr Holmes said: "Sondland told Trump that [Ukrainian President] Zelensky 'loves your ass'".
"The VP responded by neatly expressing our ongoing support for Ukraine, but wanting to hear from President Zelensky, you know, what the status of his reform efforts were that he could then convey back to the President", Williams said.Читайте также: Paul George to make Clippers debut Thursday at Pelicans
"What did you think of yesterday's deposition, of the testimony there about the phone call between Sondland..." a reporter asked.
Observers have drawn attention to the security implications of making the call from a restaurant, potentially exposing the conversation to eavesdropping by Russian intelligence.
The aide said Mr Trump had asked about "investigations" and Mr Sondland had replied that Ukraine was ready to move forward.
When the foreign service officer noted the importance of Ukraine, at war with Russia, Sondland clarified that he meant stuff that benefits the president, like the "Biden investigation".
As did Williams, Morrison told lawmakers he had concerns about Trump's remarks to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Yovanovitch was "shocked" and "devastated" to learn how Trump had personally disparaged her, she added.
While giving her evidence, Ms Yovanovitch was alerted to the president's criticism by the hearing's chairman Adam Schiff.
"I actually think that where I've served over the years I and others have demonstrably made things better, you know, for the USA as well as for the countries that I've served in", she said. Schiff read the tweet, live, on television.
"They call it 'serving at the pleasure of the President, '" Trump tweeted, referring to the appointment of ambassadors. "We see enormous potential in Ukraine and would like to have a more capable, more trustworthy partner there", the former United States diplomat said, during her testimony that lasted for more than five and half hours.
