On Friday it said this will include ads that reference a political candidate, party, election or legislation, among other limits.
The policy prohibits any ads mentioning political candidates, elections, and ballot measures, but exempts news publishers and certain "cause-based" ads.
Social network Reddit allows ads related to political issues and it allows ads from political candidates at the federal level, but not for state or local elections. And those advertisers will not be able to target people based on their political leanings, Twitter said. "A lot of what we do is issue advertising, so it really depends on how they define political advertising". While Twitter has issued guidelines for what counts as a news organization - single-issue advocacy outlets don't qualify, for instance - it's unclear if this will be enough prevent partisan websites from promoting political content.
Social media users who were previously looking forward to Twitter's political ad ban are now questioning the platform's policy after identifying potential loopholes allowing politicization within its newly announced framework.
Prior to Twitter's political advertisement ban, netizens praised Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's grilling of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for his company's recent decision to remove its prohibition of "false or misleading content" from its ad policy. It also includes appeals for votes and solicitations for campaign contributions.
In response, Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who is running for president. The ad claimed - admittedly falsely to make its point - that Zuckerberg endorsed Trump for re-election.

Biden appeared in the state Thursday, attracting a few hundred people to an outdoor rally at the edge of downtown Los Angeles. Warren's and Biden's decisions to skip the party gathering drew a rare rebuke from Rusty Hicks, the chair of the state party.
Over the past several weeks, Facebook has been pressed to change its policy. But it was Twitter instead that jumped in with its bombshell ban.
Bill Russo, deputy communications director for former Vice President Joe Biden's presidential campaign, said in a statement that he appreciates Twitter will not allow "disproven smears" to appear in ads, but said social media companies had more work to do to ensure their sites are not rife with disinformation. While their reliance on automated systems makes online ads easier and cheaper to run, Margolin said it also makes them an "attractive target" for spreading misinformation.
"We want to create a positive, welcoming environment for our Pinners and political campaign ads are divisive by nature", said Pinterest spokeswoman Jamie Favazza, who told Reuters the decision was also part of the company's strategy to address misinformation. It reported $824 million in third-quarter revenue.
Because of this, the ban is unlikely to have a big effect on overall political advertising, where television still accounts for the majority of the money spent. "Facebook and Google are the giants in political ads", said Steve Passwaiter, vice president of the Campaign Media Analysis Group at Kantar Media. Political ad spend for the 2018 USA midterm elections on Twitter was less than $3 million, the company reported.
The site does not strictly ban all issue-based advertising but the company considers whether an ad could be seen as "political" when it is reviewed, the spokeswoman said.
The Alzheimer's Association is one of many nonprofits and organisations that have put pressure on Twitter over its prohibition of political ads, which is set to start on Nov 22.
