The head of the United Auto Workers is taking a leave of absence, the powerful U.S. union under a federal corruption probe announced Saturday. "I do not want anything to distract from the mission".
Gary Jones' leave of absence, which follows a vote by the executive board, will be effective beginning Sunday, the UAW said.
Jones stepping aside came as federal law enforcement probes corruption at the top of the union, and just days after the Department of Justice charged Edward Robinson, a former union official who was one of Jones's top aides. "We want better health care coverage, better salaries and respect for our work".
Jones has not been charged, but federal agents searched his suburban Detroit home in August.
"Together throughout the last few months, we've achieved substantial victories for UAW members and we know that we have more work to do", he added.
