The approval comes shortly after Johnson & Johnson filed its Ebola vaccine candidate (Ad26.ZEBOV, MVA-BN-Filo) with the EMA, setting up a possible approval next year, and ahead of a potential approval of Ervebo in the U.S. due next March.
It also suggested that a single injection would be sufficient to protect a person from contracting Ebola, unlike Johnson & Johnson's that requires two shots eight weeks apart.
The largest outbreak to date occurred in West Africa in 2014-2016, and resulted in more than 11,000 deaths.
Christos Stylianides, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management and EU Ebola Coordinator, said: "The EU is supporting worldwide efforts to combat Ebola on all fronts, from vaccine development to delivering humanitarian aid on the ground".

A day after the European Commission approved the first-ever drug to treat Ebola - the deadly virus that kills about half of those infected, with no treatment so far, the World Health Organisation on Tuesday prequalified the vaccine that has already saved many lives in the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a statement said.
The European Commission announced that, after a trial by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), it would allow U.S. pharmaceutical giant Merck to bring the drug to market in the bloc as "Ervebo".
Amid the alarming situation with Ebola virus in West Africa, the World Health Organization officials are wasting no time in rolling vaccine out.
The current outbreak in the DRC has killed almost 2,200 since August 2018, causing almost 3,300 cases. Vytenis Andriukaitis, commissioner in charge of Health and Food Safety, said the approval was a "major step forward in saving lives in Africa and beyond". After that "prequalification", the vaccine will be able to buy in mid-2020. In late 2014, when the Ebola outbreak in western Africa was at its peak, and with the goal of applying its capabilities in process research, clinical development, and manufacturing to an important global effort, Merck acquired the rights to develop V920 from NewLink Genetics. "It is a historic milestone and a testament to the power of science, innovation and public-private partnership", Kenneth Frazier, chairman and chief executive officer at Merck, said. "Five decades back, we had no vaccine and no therapeutics for Ebola".
When the drugmaker secured CHMP backing last month, Merck Research Laboratories President Roger Perlmutter said the company's "top priority" was securing registration for its German plant where it plans to manufacture the vaccine.
