"There are still way too many people dying", said Michael Craig, a leader in CDC's superbug threat-assessment work.
Andrew Camilli and Minmin Yen write about how they and other researchers are exploiting this idea to enlist bacteria-killing viruses, called bacteriophages, to wipe out superbugs that are resistant to antibiotics.
"Solving antibiotic resistance will require ending the rampant overuse of these drugs in livestock".
Fourth, collaborating to identify gaps in environment-related resistance can promote better sanitation and access to safe water globally, which the report said is a key risk factor in antibiotic resistance.
These germs can then multiply and pass their resistance to other germs, allowing for them to distribute. A 2018 paper suggested more than 153,000 Americans die each year with - though not necessarily from - superbug infections. "Today's report demonstrates notable progress, yet the threat is still real", Dr Robert Redfield, the CDC's director, said in a statement.
Two new ones were added to the urgent category: a deadly superbug yeast called Candida auris which has alarmed health officials around the world; and a family of bacteria, ESBL-producing enterobacteriaceae, which has developed resistance to almost all antibiotics.
In addition to germs that have evolved drug resistance, the report included a unsafe infection that is linked to antibiotic use: Clostridioides difficile (C. diff).
That's nearly twice as many deaths than reported in 2013, the release says.
"Dedicated prevention and infection control efforts in the US are working to reduce the number of infections and deaths caused by antibiotic-resistant germs, but the number of people facing antibiotic resistance is still too high", the CDC stated in an overview of the report.

What are the most significant threats? Those numbers were based on 17 germs that were considered the greatest threat.
Acinetobacter bacteria cause pneumonia and infections in wounds, the bloodstream and urinary tract, typically in patients in intensive care. "We are faced with trying to take care of patients who have drug-resistant infections that we have no treatment for". Similarly, Candida auris is more likely to infect those who already have weakened immune systems, such as those who are already hospitalized or have an autoimmune disease.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae lead to the sexually transmitted ailment gonorrhea, which has developed a resistance to just about every class of antibiotics but just one.
Antibiotics used to treat human patients, animals and agricultural products "should be used only when necessary and only for appropriate durations", the CDC said.
"New kinds of resistance arise and can distribute with extraordinary pace in between continents by means of men and women, goods, and animals", the report says.
The CDC is leading the country's effort to combat the problem, the report says.
Their Antibiotic Resistance Remedies Initiative is invested in detecting, responding, made up of and preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance, according to the report.
The federal Centers for Disease Control is warning about the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria - so-called "super-bugs".
