You might be surprised then, that they have apparently grown by nearly 45% since the third quarter previous year. That's one of the findings of the newest Canalys report that's been published and which offers an overview of the market worldwide during the quarter, which was a time when (barring Google's performance) millions of people were continuing to buy new smart speakers and displays. Google was the biggest loser, slipping to fourth place with year-over-year decline of 40.1%.
One of the more unexpected (at the time) stories in the history of smart speakers came in May 2018, when research firm Canalys claimed that Google had overtaken Amazon as the biggest shipper of these devices globally - in a market where Amazon's leadership had always been taken for granted.
On a related note, the smart display category grew at a massive pace during the quarter, according to the Canalys data - seeing a 500% increase globally thanks to 6.3 million shipments between July and September.

The Amazon Echo Dot with clock is a hand-sized smart speaker that houses Amazon's infamous smart assistant, Alexa. The big victor here was Baidu with 2.3 million units sold, which was more than its smart speaker. The tech giant shipped a total of 10.4 million units in Q3 2019, followed by Alibaba, Baidu, Google, and Xiaomi, who shipped 3.9, 3.7, 3.5, and 3.4 million smart speaker units, respectively.
Overall, Amazon saw a growth of 65.9% annually boosted by its strong sales from its Prime Day, back-to-school, and off-to-college promotions during the quarter.
While the drop in market share can be tied to slower sales, it also has much more to do with the rise of smart speakers from Chinese brands. Amazon wasn't far behind, selling 2.2 million in the third quarter, while Google only moved a paltry 700,000 smart displays.
