In this photo released by NASA on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019, US astronauts Jessica Meir, left, and Christina Koch pose for a photo in the International Space Station.
NASA's live coverage of the event will begin tomorrow around 11.30am BST (6.30am EDT).
NASA says the failed power unit "has no impact on the crew's safety or ongoing laboratory experiments". The two astronauts will replace the faulty power regulator, which has been in operation since 2000 and failed to activate after new lithium-ion batteries were installed on the space station last week.
Meir, 42, earned her doctorate at UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2009.
The International Space Station's Twitter account tweeted Tuesday evening that the spacewalk will take place "no earlier than Friday", updating NASA's earlier announcement that it would happen either Thursday or Friday morning.
The schedule change is a plus for the University of California San Diego, which is celebrating homecoming this weekend. NASA put the remaining battery replacements on hold to fix the problem and moved up the women's planned spacewalk by three days.

He said the two sides had agreed on currency provisions last week, which will be reviewed "as we put out the report". "The final goal of both sides' negotiations is to end the trade war and cancel all additional tariffs", Gao said .
NASA emphasized that the faulty BCDU doesn't pose any danger to the station or the astronauts, but it's preventing the ISS from receiving an expected increase in power.

As of Thursday, men dominated the spacewalking field, 213 to 14. The other was Anne McClain, who has since returned to Earth.
Koch and Meir are both members of NASA's 2013 Astronaut Class, an eight-person cohort with an equal number of men and women.
She was replaced on board in September by Meir. "So it's really nice to see how far that we've come".
