Domenico Giani, the Vatican's longtime chief of security and Pope Francis' main bodyguard, resigned on Monday after a document related to an investigation into alleged financial wrongdoing in the Vatican leaked to the press, the Holy Sea said in a statement.
The Vatican was shaken by a new scandal two weeks ago after the Italian magazine L'Espresso published its internal police flyer signed by Pope Francis' chief bodyguard Domenico Giani. Despite not being formally suspended, the flyer said that the individuals should not be allowed to enter the Vatican's territory.
The Pope described the leak as comparable to a "mortal sin" and ordered an investigation, saying it harmed personal dignity and the principle of presumption of innocence.
The Holy See's Secretariat of State is in control of millions of dollars donated by Catholics across the world.
Giani was Commander of the Vatican Gendarmerie, and had been a part of the Vatican's security and police force for more than 20 years.
Giani didn't take responsibility for the mishap but resigned to avoid disrupting the investigation and "out of love for the church and faithfulness" to the pope.
Giani has been a fixture at papal audiences and apostolic visits for two decades, a time that included some of the most perilous moments in the Catholic Church. It is responsible for the political and diplomatic functions of the Vatican.
"As Commander, I too was ashamed of what has happened and of the suffering caused to these people", he said in the interview.

Vatican sources say the still-murky episode has all the hallmarks of a power struggle involving the AIF, the Vatican bank, the office of the auditor general and the Secretariat of State, the nerve center of the tiny city-state.
The day after the raid, a memo bearing photos of the five employees supposedly suspected of involvement in the scandal was distributed internally to Vatican security staff.
Media outlets also questioned the funding of Giani's expensive work on his apartment near the Vatican as confirmed by several Italian news outlets and sources near the Vatican.
