Lions go toe to toe with Chiefs, lose 34-30 heartbreaker

This is the first time the Lions have fumbled twice in the red zone in the same game since Week 7 of the 2012 season against the Bears.

The Kansas City Chiefs leaned on RB Darrel Williams in the final minutes of their come-from-behind win against the Detroit Lions. Cornerback Bashaud Breeland picked it up from the pile in the end zone and returned it 100 yards to put the Chiefs up 20-13. Those mistakes cost the Lions dearly, but in spite of all that, Detroit re-took the lead twice in the second half. The scheme, though, cleared space for Mahomes to run and coach Matt Patricia doesn't regret it.

"I feel like we can play with anybody, but, like you said, there are no moral victories", Lions linebacker Devon Kennard said. But this was a different kind of disappointment than they're used to in Detroit, where the home team has won just one, yes one, playoff game against 12 losses in the 53 years since the end goal was the Super Bowl.

There's little time for moral victories in a 16-game National Football League season, but if the Lions were criticized for some of their shortcomings in wins over the Chargers and Eagles, they can certainly receive credit for much of what they did Sunday, even in defeat.

Matthew Stafford threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns for Detroit (2-1-1). "I think we're learning a lot about them today".

"It was a good opportunity to beat a good team, and we were darn close". Golladay had a touchdown overturned earlier because he appeared to lose control of the football as he hit the turf, and Stafford lost a fumble on the next play. "Kansas City is a great team". While the Lions offense is filled with many threats to catch the ball, their offense looked a little stagnant without him. The quarterback lined up in shotgun with a running back to his left, the pocket broke and Mahomes scrambled up the middle untouched. Kansas City fumbled the opening kickoff, which set Detroit up at the Kansas City 36.

The Lions had Kansas City backed up with a fourth-and-8 from their own 34-yard line, but Mahomes was able to pick up the first down with a 15-yard run.

Ball security. Those two third-quarter fumbles weren't flukes.

Riveron previously explained in an appearance on the #PFTPM podcast that replay review in Hail Mary situations will entail the same relaxed standard that applies on the field when a team launches a wing and a prayer. "The Lions, we're trying to figure out their identity".
