At an event here in NY today, Google unveiled the Pixelbook Go. The notebook has a smooth, rounded design and a ribbed, grippy bottom that Google says is built for portability and usability in mind. We're surprised Google hasn't chosen to make Pixelbook Go available in other colour options, but perhaps those might arrive in future.
Despite a bigger 13-inch display and a thicker frame, the Pixelbook Go is lighter than the Pixelbook, owing to a matte painted magnesium frame that I absolutely loved. It comes in two attractive colors, which are called Just Black and Not Pink.
Just because the Pixelbook Go is made to be grippier than the regular Pixelbook, don't expect a rubbery design. There are also two USB-C ports for charging (including fast charging) and headphone jack. No fingerprint reader or facial authentication, either, though the 2MP camera does 1080p video capture at 60fps if that's your bag.
"Pixelbook Go is lighter than Pixelbook but we still managed to add a battery that is 15% larger, making it easier to keep working all day", said Ross.
Google's choice to use 8th gen Intel Core chips isn't surprising, especially since the Pixelbook Go still gets 12 hours of battery. Like leaks suggested, it's in a 16:9 aspect ratio instead of the original Pixelbook's 3:2.
As for performance, Google is promising up to 12 hours of use time on a single charge, with a battery inside that can draw up to two hours of use from just 20 minutes of charging.

Winter storm forecast: No travel advisory as snow hits Dakotas

The only details that really give away its lower price are the chunky bezels and 1080p display (a 4K panel is available only on the top $1,399 SKU). Finally, Google says Adaptive Brightness is on board as well but we weren't able to find the setting on the couple units we tested. But again, the event space was extremely loud so I had to frequently hold the laptop up to my ears to hear. While it's not a tablet, or a two-in-one, I rarely used the Pixelbook in that configuration. Something Google itself acknowledged when I spoke with Google VP Phil Carmack and Senior Product Manager Ben Janfosky.
To wit, the keyboard is just as nice as I remember it, featuring clicky keys with superb travel, and a nice uniform backlight. We don't know. This device could be the new best budget laptop, and pricier configs (which include a version with an i7 CPU and 4K display) could take the original Pixelbook's title of best Chromebook.
So which version of Google's laptop is right for you?
The Pixelbook Go features a backlit keyboard that Google boasts is super quiet.
The laptop is created to be presented at a more affordable price, to be more accessible to more customers.
