"In order to protect the greater good, the people of Culiacan's safety and well-being, the (federal government's) security cabinet chose to suspend said actions", Durazo said in a video message. Videos posted on social media showed trucks with heavy machine guns patrolling city streets.
People could be seen running for cover as automatic gun fire rattled around them.
Drivers drove in reverse frantically to move away from the clashes.
