California has become the first U.S. state to ban the manufacture and sale of animal fur. The proposal was vigorously opposed by the billion-dollar USA fur industry, and the Fur Information Council of America has already threatened to sue.
The new law doesn't cover the use of leather or cow hides, or the full skin of deer, sheep or goats. "Every state college campus in California will now be turned into an abortion facility", president of Students for Life of America Kristan Hawkins told "Fox & Friends".
The law comes as a number of high-end fashion designers, including Gucci, Versace and Prada, have announced they have stopped, or plan to stop, using fur in their designs.
The governor also commented on the state's decision to ban most animals, such as elephants and bears, from performing in circuses.
It is first state-wide fur ban in the United States, and had been sought by animal rights advocates. It does not apply to rodeos.

Earlier this month, Newsom also approved Assembly Bill 1510, which gives victims of alleged sexual abuse by former USC campus gynecologist George Tyndall an extra year to file lawsuits.
California is officially going fur-free.
At first, critics warned the proposal was too broad and would impact county fairs, wildlife rescues or rehabilitation organizations. The prohibition-as stated in the law-will include parks, wilderness areas, and wildlife refuges. "Now, adult survivors of child sexual abuse will have a chance to be heard", tweeted Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, the bill's author, on Sunday.
The Southwest California Legislative Council opposed the law, saying it will prevent people from being able "to experience the thrill of a circus performance featuring handsome, well-cared-for animals". The new laws take effect January 1. There is no doubt that animals suffer greatly in circuses. "PETA is proud to have worked with compassionate legislators to push these lifesaving laws forward and looks to other states to follow California's progressive lead". A new bill to protect human and animal victims of domestic violence was also passed and existing anti-horse slaughter laws were strengthened.
