He said it is "close to inconceivable" the United Kingdom can increase trade with the U.S. enough to replace lost trade with the EU. But in country-by-country comparisons, the U.S.is Britain's biggest single overseas market.

Sterling was trading 0.2% at $1.21 (GBPUSD=X) on Wednesday morning, with most analysts expecting the decline to continue over the next few months as the planned exit date of 31 October gets closer and as rhetoric between the United Kingdom government and the European Union grows increasingly hostile.

Mr. Raab made the rounds in Washington this week and spoke briefly with Mr. Trump on the sidelines of scheduled meetings with Vice President Mike Pence and National Security Adviser John R. Bolton.

'The UK looks forward to working with our American friends to reach a free trade deal that is good for both countries, and cooperating on the common security challenges we face'.

Tehran said Sunday that it had intercepted a third ship traveling in the Gulf, just weeks after Iranian forces seized a British tanker traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping channel in the Gulf.
