You might remember this entire ordeal happening way back in May of this year, which seems like a lifetime ago; since then, we've seen a topsy turvy story of new operating systems, potential workarounds, and more, which all ended with the United States creating a licensing system that would allow Huawei to deal with U.S. companies again.
The new, multi-purpose HarmonyOS can be used to power smart TVs, in-vehicle systems, smart speakers as well as wearable devices such as smart watches, according to Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group. But while this represents a significant step in reducing the Chinese firm's reliance on American tech systems, there are no immediate plans to replace Google's Android, at least not in the next three years. "The US government, anxious that Huawei could assemble security flaw" backdoors" to 5G and other communications infrastructure, has driven governments around the globe to avoid employing the Chinese giant's equipment. "You can develop your apps, then flexibly deploy them across a range of different devices". He also went onto remark that the first version of the operating system in smartphones would get launched by the end of this year.
Moreover, Yu explained that the situation with Google remains "unclear" but he stressed that Huawei would prefer to continue using Android on its smartphones. Huawei was alleged for its cybersecurity. At the same time, the HarmonyOS will enable developers to win over more users with less investment, and rapidly innovate services across all scenarios.
Brought on by US President Donald Trump, the restriction blocks any US company from doing business with Huawei, unless given prior government approval. And Huawei will also establish an open-source foundation and open-source community to fast-track the ecosystem's growth.
Because the HarmonyOS is open source, developers are given the ability to create apps for it using the ARK Compiler.

With HarmonyOS, app developers won't have to deal with the underlying technology for distributed apps.
"For instance, when I put an experience on a TV that also needs to work on a phone, I either have to have a massive amount of conditional logic - in essence, building two separate user interfaces - or I build to the lowest common denominator, making both experiences look poor", the Principal Analyst at Forrester Research, Michael Facemire said.
