The new rule handed down by the Trump Administration says that a health care provider using federal Title X funding can not tell their patients abortion is an option available to them.
Planned Parenthood announced this afternoon that the organization will withdraw from the Title X federal family planning program, after the Trump Administration implemented restrictions surrounding abortion referrals for those receiving money from the federal program.
But in Vermont, the state government says it's stepping in to replace the lost Title X federal funds while maintaining access to abortion and other family planning services for thousands of low-income women.
While the federal dollars didn't fund abortions, Tasy contended they were being used indirectly.
The Trump administration earlier this year finalized a rule requiring Title X grantees to adhere to a so-called gag rule that prohibits them from referring a patient for an abortion.
"We will do everything we can to make sure Planned Parenthood patients don't lose care", she tweeted.
"Due to an unethical and unsafe gag rule, the Trump administration has forced Planned Parenthood grantees out of Title 10", Alexis McGill, acting president and CEO of Planned Parenthood, told journalists on a conference call. Because of the gag rule, Planned Parenthood says it can not remain in a program in which it's participated for decades.
"It is unfathomable that anyone would want to prevent healthcare providers from giving their patients accurate medical information and referrals to other safe, quality health care providers", she added.
Health Commissioner Mark Levine announced Monday that he had notified the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that Vermont would stop using Title X dollars to fund Planned Parenthood of Northern New England's services at 10 clinics.
