When No Man's Sky launched it was a total crash-landing rather successful take-off. VR probably fits the game much more as an adventure of imagination inspired by classic science fiction.
We knew there was something afoot yesterday when an ESRB age rating for No Man's Sky: Beyond was spotted, leading to speculation that an update was imminent.
We're closing in on a release date for No Man's Sky: Beyond, a major expansion that will overhaul multiplayer and introduce VR. That's less than 2 weeks away to experience the largest free update Hello Games has ever dropped for No Man's Sky, and this is the big one that includes the game-changing VR support, too. This is not the end of it, however, as the developers said: "We'll continue to support No Man's Sky in this way for the foreseeable future". Dubbed Beyond, the update rolls out in just two short weeks on August 14.
"Grab the joystick and thruster to fly your starship over an unexplored alien planet as you peer out of the cockpit at the view below", Hello Games explains. You can play with others with or without VR as well.

Highlights include a expansion to Online, which sounds like it'll transform it, bringing a "radical new social and multiplayer experience", and giving players "everywhere" in its universe the power to play together. While regular No Man's Sky multiplayer is pretty straightforward as a co-op experience, perhaps No Man's Sky Online might be a collection of different game modes.
Whilst this brings people together like never before, and has many recognisable online elements, we don't consider No Man's Sky to be an MMO - it won't require a subscription, won't contain microtransactions, and will be free for all existing players.
Say what you will about the game's 2016 launch (we certainly critiqued it in our review), No Man's Sky has come a long, long way with its huge multitude of free updates. All current No Man's Sky content will be playable on Oculus Rift, Vive, and PSVR.
