New South Wales (NSW) police have said: "A man is in custody after allegedly stabbing a woman in Sydney's CBD this afternoon".
The woman was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital with a stab wound to her upper back and is in a stable condition.
"Police operation King & Clarence St, Sydney CBD".
Other images show the suspect being pinned down with a chair and a milk crate, then being taken away by police.
One witness, Marcon, told the Daily Mail Australia: "He was trying to smash a driver side window of a random auto with the knife".
Vision posted on Twitter shows the man yell: "F***ing shoot me in the f***ing head" before he was wrestled to the ground by bystanders and a milk crate was placed over his head by Mr O'Shaughnessy.
"Members of the public detains the man before police attended and arrested him".
Witnesses said the man was carrying a 30-centimeter kitchen knife as he attempted to stab multiple people near a busy intersection in Australia's largest city.
An employee from the shop told news.com.au he saw the man run past.
Police said they had not yet determined a motive for the stabbings.
