While Canalys found that the global smart speaker market grew by more than 55 percent in the second quarter of 2019, and much of the reason is tied to Baidu, which sells its line of smart speakers exclusively in China.
About half of smart speakers from Amazon and Google were shipped to markets outside the US, according to Canalys. This was followed by Baidu and Google with 17.3% and 16.7% market share respectively. Baidu in Q2 grew a sizable 3,700% to reach 4.5 million units, overtaking Google's 4.3 million units shipped.
Both Amazon and Google have focused efforts on global growth, with over 50% of Q2 shipments for each companies directed to worldwide markets. Google also shipped 55-percent of its smart speakers out of the United States this past quarter, up from 42% in the same period previous year. More than 50% of both companies' smart speaker products are now going to markets outside the US.
The Chinese market will become a more valuable audience for the United States players to win as sales of smart speakers slow in their own country.
Incidentally, Google launched the Google Nest Hub smart display in India just today.
The rise of Baidu in the smart speaker segment shows that consumers in China are buying more connected speakers with a built-in voice assistant more than any other market in the world.
Canalys Analysis Analyst Cynthia Chen commented on Baidu's progress attributing it to aggressive advertising and marketing and go-to-market campaigns. It's important to remember that Google is focussing on building out its offer as a platform for other hardware manufacturers to integrate its software.
The US is no longer the focal point for smart speakers as it saw 6.1 million shipments while China stood at 12.6 million shipments. According to the data compiled by Canalys, Google had shipped 5.4 million units of smart speakers in Q2 2018, capturing 32.3-percent of the global market.
