Bennett and his wife Carol, both 63, were found by a friend who performed a welfare check after phoning Todd County Sheriff's Office to report that they had not responded to texts or phone calls since Tuesday.
But sources have identified the victims as Bennett and his wife, KMSP reported.
Barry Bennett played football at Concordia College in Moorhead in the mid- to late-1970s, then went on to play 11 seasons in the NFL including one year with the Vikings in 1988. Bennett was reportedly living with his parents and may have fled the state in a blue 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe.
Todd County Sheriff Steve Och issued a statement about the incident: "Based on information gathered during the investigation, it is determined that there is no threat to public safety at this time".

In Long Prairie, about 130 miles northwest of Minneapolis, residents are mourning the Bennetts.
"It hit hard this morning", said Jon Kringen, superintendent for the Long Prairie Grey Eagle School District. "Everyone was in shock when they heard".
The bodies have been sent to the medical examiner's office to determine cause of death.
