Clegg, who was very outspoken about apartheid in the 1980s, sold more than five million albums over three decades and enjoyed a massive following worldwide, especially in France, where he was fondly known as "the white Zulu". Clegg also recorded several solo albums and enjoyed worldwide success selling out concerts wherever he performed.
Ahead of his 2017 farewell tour, Clegg told AFP that to be able to "unite people through song" was among the great rewards of his career.
Clegg received a number of honorary doctorates and awards, including the presidential Order of Ikhamanga. They were just the second South African act to be honoured at the prestigious awards.
