Bernie Sanders' campaign staffers claim they're really getting berned - by not being paid the $15-an-hour minimum wage the democratic socialist advocates for all workers.
Field organizers, who are on the front lines of the campaign's crucial voter contact efforts, were to be paid not by hours worked but via an annual salary set at $36,000.
A source tells CNN that campaign officials were in a room with representatives from the union, discussing the topic, when the campaign was first made aware of the Post's story.
Shakir pressed for a swift vote so he could make budget decisions and decide how many field organizers to hire, according to his email.
According to documents reviewed by the Post, Shakir was immediately engaged in some tense negotiations with that union.
"We look forward to continuing those discussions and obviously are disappointed that some individuals made a decision to damage the integrity of these efforts before they were concluded", Shakir said.
The Post reports that the letter from staff argued field organizers are working at least 60 hours a week and therefore making an hourly rate of $13 per hour.
"We are proud of our workers and proud to uphold Bernie's commitment to collective bargaining rights and a strong labor movement", campaign manager Faiz Shakir said in a statement reported by NPR at the time.

The independent from Vermont has also led the fight to boost the current minimum wage, which stands at $7.25 an hour, to $15.
I am presently being paid the maximum wage in schadenfreude while writing about this, by the way.
Its fate within his own campaign, though, remains unresolved. We have tremendous staff who are working hard. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro.
The staffers are represented by the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400.
It was not completely clear why the wage dispute began so swiftly after the campaign and the union reached the initial agreement, though at that point the campaign had yet to assemble its sprawling roster of field organizers. "But it doesn't have to be this way. I congratulate our members on the Bernie Sanders campaign for making their own revolution".
Still, Sanders has been supportive of the effort and the campaign voluntarily recognized staffers' bargaining unit. It asks that field organizers be paid $46,800 annually and regional field directors be paid $62,400 annually. That salary works out to under $15 and hour based on the 60-hour work week.
