Asus will be the first to use the 855 Plus chip, in its upcoming ROG Phone II, which is arriving as soon as July 23. The 855 is now being used in all the top Android flagship phones, including the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the OnePlus 7 Pro.
Qualcomm announced today a refresh for its Snapdragon 855 mobile platform, something the company has been known to do for its flagship mobile processors once in a few generations. But Qualcomm is also touting it for use in virtual, augmented, and so-called extended reality features; think smartphone-powered and standalone VR handsets as well as more advanced smartphone apps that make use of AR features.
The new Snapdragon 855 Plus is primarily created to give a boost in mobile gaming, and offers a way for smartphone makers to differentiate their standard and gaming smartphone lineups. The Snapdragon 855 Plus is a mid-year refresh to the flagship Snapdragon 855 SoC that is now the staple of a majority of Android flagships. And with Apple rumoured to release a new A-series chip later this autumn, a small bump in performance for the chips installed in competing Android phones certainly won't hurt. The Snapdragon 855 Plus can be connected to an external X50 modem for 5G support.
Specifically, the 8-core processor will run at up to 2.96GHz instead of 2.84GHz, while the upgraded Adreno 640 graphics should provide a speed boost in the region of 15%.

Now Qualcomm has announced a new variant, the 855 Plus.
It makes ideal sense for the 855 Plus to make its way into a gaming phone seeing as how the new processor has been touting its increased performance.
We can't say if this new version will replace the still new Snapdragon 855 version or if both will exist side-by-side. We've seen some devices with the 855 already receive a custom kernel that supports these higher clock speeds but your mileage will vary.
