Rob Marshall, who helmed Disney's sequel Mary Poppins Returns a year ago, is directing Little Mermaid, which will feature Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's songs from the original 1989 animated feature ("Under the Sea" won the Oscar) and new tunes from Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The Bridesmaids star is still in the early stages of negotiations to portray the sea witch in the remake of the beloved animated Disney movie, which will be directed by Mary Poppins Returns filmmaker Rob Marshall, according to Variety. Which sounds great, but casting McCarthy, inspired as it may be, feels very much on the nose. Well, Disney appears to have one less hard decision to make for the upcoming live-action movie.
The live-action Little Mermaid does not yet have a release date.
