After triggering backlash over tweets urging progressive congresswomen to go back to their "broken and crime infested" home countries, President Trump appeared unbowed Sunday night, suggesting it was "so sad" to see Democrats sticking up for the lawmakers.
The members of "the Squad" are Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York; Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts; Rashida Tlaib of MI; and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia; her family fled the country amid civil war when she was a child, and she became a us citizen as a teenager.
It is the latest controversial comment by Trump, who previous year reportedly referred to countries in Africa as "shithole" nations, and who has spoken of "an invasion" of undocumented migrants.
Trump's tweets quickly drew a response from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who said the president wants to "make America white again". Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) are extremely unpopular and could cost Democrats both their House majority and the presidency in 2020.
Commenting on the president's tweet on Sunday, conservative journalist Salena Zito weighed in on how Trump supporters would receive the comments, which CNN has labeled "straight-up racist". "I deal with Nancy Pelosi a lot and we go back and forth and it's fine, but I think that a group of people is being very disrespectful to her".
The party-line vote on the annual defense measure came after more than two dozen Republicans joined with Democrats on a 251-170 tally to require Trump to get authorization from Congress to conduct military strikes against Iran. Omar said the president is "stoking white nationalism [because] you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda".

New Zealanders give up weapons after mosque killings
The government, with support from opposition parties, immediately rushed through legislation to tighten New Zealand's gun laws. With armed police monitoring the handover, 169 firearms owners handed in 224 weapons and 217 parts and accessories.
None immediately commented on Trump's tweets on Sunday. On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you can not accept that we don't fear you, either.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY, after jousting for days with Pelosi, said Trump "can't conceive of an America that includes us". After voting against a House border security bill last month, the squad trashed moderate Democrats who helped pass the legislation, accusing them of caving to the White House and perpetuating the separation of immigrant families they railed against. Telling people to go back where they came from?
Tlaib, who is a Palestinian-American born in Detroit, called Trump a "lawless & complete failure of a President".
But he's unmistakably referring to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY and her allies in what's become known as the squad. "Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power".
"When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm's distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understood", she told The Washington Post.
