The US president tweeted the news on his return to the White House from D-day commemorations while the Mexican Ambassador to Washington promised reinforced border controls would begin on Monday.
"Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to stem the tide of Migration through Mexico, and to our Southern Border".
"The United States Government has repeatedly asked the Government of Mexico to take responsibility and help reduce this mass migration".
On Thursday, the Mexican official said, the Mexican government indicated it is willing to make asylum changes for the sake of a coordinated regional approach to stem the flow of Central American migrants now flooding into the United States.
Making official a policy that has triggered opposition in both countries, the USA said it would systematically send back asylum seekers who cross the border, with Mexico offering them jobs, health care and education. Details of this agreement will be released shortly by the State Department. Even though a deal has not yet been reached, this proposal from Mexico suggests that Trump's tariff threat is doing exactly what Trump said it would do: force Mexico to do something about the flow of migrants through their country into the United States.
Those tariffs, plus accumulating tariffs the Trump administration already has imposed, would wipe out the savings average Americans got from the tax cut several times over.
Mexico made concessions during the talks, offering to send 6,000 troops to its southern border with Guatemala, but has said it wants to see a long-term solution that would involve economic development aid.

"Thanks to the support of all Mexicans, we were able to avoid tariffs on Mexican products exported to the USA", tweeted Lopez Obrador, who since his election past year has tried studiously not to antagonise Trump.
Trump made the announcement only hours after returning from Europe and following several days of intense and sometimes hard negotiations between officials from the two countries in Washington.
It's part of an agreement reached Friday to put off tariffs ordered by President Donald Trump.
Senate Republicans had threatened to attempt a veto-proof blocking of the tariffs had they actually been enacted.
Mexico previous year was the United States' No. 2 market for USA agricultural products, buying $19 billion worth of fruit, vegetables and other products. Mexico has opposed such a change but appeared open to considering a potential compromise that could include exceptions or waivers for different types of cases.
Trump on Thursday had said "a lot of progress was made" earlier this week in talks with Mexican officials, but repeatedly stood by his vow to impose the tariffs, despite criticism from some Republicans, who have urged him to delay the implementation. The joint declaration, however makes no mention of the issue.
Mexico's Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said in a Tweet: "There will be no application of tariffs by the USA on Monday".
