South Africa beat Afghanistan to keep World Cup hopes alive

Put into bat, Afghanistan crumbled to 125 all out with spinner Imran Tahir picking four wickets.

A haul of four wickets doubles his tally at the 2019 tournament but, given the gulf in quality between the two sides, his typically exuberant celebrations, racing gleefully across the outfield, were perhaps needlessly over the top on this occasion.

An extra run added to their target by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method was never likely to inconvenience the South Africa innings, played in bright evening sunshine, and when Afghanistan's star leg-spinner Rashid came into the attack for the ninth over they were 25-0. Quinton de Kock then fired 68 as South Africa chased down the revised DLS target of 127 in 28.4 overs.

All the Cricket World Cup action between South Africa and Afghanistan.

With rain in the air and a pitch so green in patches that it matched South Africa's bright shirts, Tahir's leg-spin was surely the one weapon Du Plessis was not expecting to deploy. We did not play a 50-over game because we did not last.

They have lost all but one of their matches and the one they didn't lose was washed out. "It was important for me to take that role for the team". We have seen at this World Cup that it is harder to bowl slightly fuller and usually you get more reward if you bang it in back of a length.

India's retaliatory tariffs on 28 American goods take effect
US-India bilateral alternate used to be rate $142bn (£111bn) in 2018, a sevenfold extend since 2001, in step with US figures. The tariffs come just days ahead of a scheduled meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G-20 summit.

Gulbadin Naib's side had battled admirably in the 20 overs before the second rain delay, thanks principally to Hazratullah Zazai (23) and Noor Ali Zadran (32) - Zadran successfully overturning an lbw decision against Phehlukwayo on 30 with UltraEdge confirming he had inside-edged the ball.

Andile Phehluklwayo (2/18 from 8 overs) had Hashmatullah Shahidi caught at slip in the first over after the restart and then Imran Tahir (4/29 from 7 overs) bagged two - first beating Zadran through the gate with a googly, then taking a simple return catch off Asghar Afghan's leading edge - to reduce the score to 70/5.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis: "Today was a good day for us". Both teams have a lot of young players.

After Afghanistan, South Africa play New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia before the group stage ends on July 6. "Morris (Chris) and Tahir were fantastic in the middle overs as they got wickets". From what I'm hearing from the physios is that that will happen; they're pretty confident. "We lost the toss so we did not take responsibility enough and that was the difference", he said. "It was just a case of reminding the guys not to get frustrated with doing the things we need to do and not to feel we need to change our plans or panic".

South Africa were unchanged from the team that started the match against the West Indies, which ended in a no result.
