Microsoft's Bill Gates has revealed that the company losing to Android was "one of the greatest mistakes of all time". "The greatest mistake ever is whatever mismanagement I engaged in that caused Microsoft not to be what Android is".

Microsoft missed its chance to be the dominant firm in mobile technology because it was "distracted" during a lengthy antitrust battle with U.S. authorities, company co-founder Bill Gates said Monday.

But despite "having made one of the greatest mistakes of all time", Gates said Microsoft is still "very strong".

The device will run Microsoft's new Windows Core OS which will have the ability to run Android apps.

In a recent interview, Bill Gates has said that his biggest regret was that he didn't come up with a decent alternative to iOS and ceded that ground to Google.

"It really is victor takes all", Gates continued.

"There's room for exactly one non-Apple operating system, and what's that worth? 400 billion? That would be transferred from company G to company M". This ended up leading to an emergency meeting in late 2008 when the higher-ups at Microsoft chose to scrap Windows Mobile and completely reboot its mobile efforts. Microsoft was actually an early leader in mobile with its Windows Mobile family of operating systems, but the launch of the iPhone in 2007 and the first Android phone a year later completely disrupted the mobile market. After all, it remains the world's most valuable company due to its tremendous success with Windows, Azure, and Xbox.

At an event last week with other business leaders, billionaire businessman Gates chatted to Eventbrite cofounder and CEO Julia Hartz about founding a company.

United States venture-capital firm Village Global has posted the Bill Gates interview.

Gates' admission of part of the fault is something surprising since many had assumed that the opportunity lost by Microsoft was an error of the Steve Ballmer era.

Gates praised the current chief executive Satya Nadella for helping reshape Microsoft and bring it back to the being the world's most valuable company with a market capitalization of over $1 trillion.
