Warren Gatland has been confirmed as head coach of the British and Irish Lions for the 2021 tour of South Africa.
Gatland won his third Six Nations Grand Slam with Wales this year and has been named as a possible successor to Eddie Jones when he steps down as England head coach in August 2021.
He was also an assistant to Ian McGeechan - the only other man to have coached the Lions on three different Tours - when they last toured South Africa, losing the 2009 series 2-1.
Gatland will relinquish his role as Wales boss after the World Cup and will then start his official Lions duties in August 2020.
Nonetheless, Fitzgerald is right in raising the point that Lions tours are about the fusion of ideas and styles from different coaches and players, which is limited by having the same person four eight years. Speaking about his latest appointment, which was widely expected, Gatland said he had "unfinished business" against the Springboks. I'm looking forward to working alongside him to give the Lions the best chance of success in South Africa.
