The quake struck at 10.22pm local time (2.22pm BST) at a depth of about 10km about 53 miles northeast of the island of Honshu. All seven reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant in Niigata were off line and no abnormalities have been reported.
Reports surfaced noting that 992 pounds of cocaine were recently seized in a drug bust in a Philadelphia shipyard on a ship. Other crew members were also allegedly involved, the complaint charges.
At least two crew members were arrested, a spokesperson for the EPDA told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In February, customs agents seized 3,200 pounds (1,451 kilograms) at the Port of NY and New Jersey with a street value estimated at $77 million. According to VesselFinder.com, in the past month, the ship has docked in Freeport, Bahamas; Cristobal, Panama; Callao, Peru; and Buenoventura, Colomia.
The company says it's grateful to authorities for "identifying any suspected abuse of its services".
The drug seizure is the latest in a series of large cocaine busts along the East Coast. A 1989 bust in downtown Los Angeles netted nearly 43,000 pounds (19,504 kilograms) of the drug.
