"Two of the Russian bombers were intercepted by two F-22s, and a second group of bombers with Su-35 fighters was intercepted later by two additional F-22s, while the E-3 provided overall surveillance", NORAD said, adding that "the Russian bombers and fighters remained in worldwide airspace and at no time did the aircraft enter United States or Canadian sovereign airspace".
The incident comes as the Defense Department's biannual Northern Edge exercise is in full swing in Alaska.
The Tu-95MS strategic bombers spent over 12 hours in the air, the ministry specified.
A short time later, two additional Tu-95s and two Sukhoi Su-35 fighters were identified and intercepted by two other NORAD F-22s.
The intercept comes amid heightened tensions between Russian Federation and the U.S. on a wide range of geopolitical issues.
