But President Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen earlier this year told a House committee that he had met with both Donald Trump Jr. and his sister, Ivanka Trump, "approximately 10" times to brief them about the Trump Tower plan.
The suggestion that Burr is failing to properly lead the committee is the first real sign of any dissention among its members, who have worked together quietly since the panel's Russian Federation investigation began in early 2017.
It was the first known legal summons issued by Congress to a member of the president's family to force testimony in the ongoing investigation.
Lying to a congressional committee could be a crime, and Senate intelligence members are likely interested in finding out whether Trump Jr. deliberately misled them in 2017. Trump said as much, adding that "my son is a very good person".
"Frankly, for my son after being exonerated and now, getting subpoenaed, and to go again to speak again after close to 20 hours telling everybody that would listen" about the Trump Tower meeting, Trump said, he was "very surprised" by the subpoena. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, wrote on Twitter, linking to the Axios story breaking news of the subpoena. If there's any subject matter less suitable to partisan wrangling, I can't think of it. "My son was totally exonerated by Mueller", Trump said.
Committee sources would not confirm the subpoena or what they want to discuss with the president's eldest son, who now helps run the Trump Organization, the family's real estate empire, and helps his father re-election campaign.
Burr's decline to give insight into his thinking came as some Republicans publicly defended his subpoena of Trump Jr., including all Republican members of the committee, and as a growing number slammed the move.

The special counsel's report on Russian Federation and the 2016 election notes some contradictions in what Trump Jr. told the Senate committee and what some witnesses told special counsel investigators.
"Don and Senate Intel agreed from the very beginning that he would appear once to testify before the committee and would remain for as long as it took to answer all of their questions".
She continued by suggesting Trump Jr. was child-like in his attachment to his father.
"Case closed! ... Let's move on and get to work on the real issues facing America", said Tillis, who is facing a Republican challenger in his 2020 reelection bid. He said Burr's job as chairman is "a challenging assignment every day".
"The Mueller report came out, that's the bible, and they said he did nothing wrong", the president said.
The report did not make a judgment on obstruction of justice charges, but Attorney General William Barr cleared Trump.
"Cornyn, speaking to reporters outside of the Judiciary Committee, said that he could "understand [Trump Jr.'s] frustration" and warned that 'at some point ... this smacks of politics".
