The first is a new Cortex-A77 CPU, which will drive a 20 percent uplift in IPC performance compared to the Cortex-A76 used in the Snapdragon 855, while memory bandwidth has increased by 15 percent.
Arm believes that its new suite of premium IP - Cortex-A77 CPU, Mali-G77 GPU, the Arm ML processor, the Arm NN framework, and the company's recently announced Mali-D77 display processor - will provide a preview of what's possible with premium smartphones that will hit market shelves in 2020. However, the company also argues that 85% of smartphones today run machine learning through either only a CPU or a CPU+GPU combination and that even the CPU hands over to the accelerator when it is available, even if there is a GPU or a dedicated machine learning chip. The new GPU design will also offer 30 percent additional energy efficiency and will be 60 percent faster when running machine learning inference and neural net workloads for advanced on-device intelligence. This means GPUs based on the design will take up that much less space, which is significant because the graphics card is usually one of the largest components on a phone's chipset. Arm has based the GPU on a brand new architecture called Valhall and upgraded several core components, not just the ones focused on AI. That's up from a peak performance of 4.6 trillion operations per second before.
Mali-G77 boasts key micro-architecture enhancements including engine, texture pipes, and load store caches, which achieve 30 percent better energy efficiency and 30 percent more performance density. It can be noted that the first actual chips may be seen by the year end, going by past references.
