This year's measles outbreak is on track to be the biggest since the sometimes deadly virus was eliminated in the U.S.in 2000.
There are in fact no confirmed measles cases in Washtenaw County, health officials told The Ann Arbor News and MLive on Thursday, April 11. There are also significant outbreaks in Washington state, California, Michigan and New Jersey.
"The children who are not vaccinated appear to have been exposed to measles by attending family events in Rockland County and in Brooklyn, where there have been ongoing outbreaks", Latimer says.
Elsewhere in the country, health officials are scrambling to diagnose victims, identify hot spots and disseminate information about the outbreak, which has been reported in a total 19 states, most recently in Maryland.
But last month, a NY suburb declared a measles emergency after 153 cases of measles were reported in Rockland County since October 2018.
People living in the four affected ZIP codes were warned they face a $1,000 fine or six months in prison if they skip the vaccine. A person is considered immune if he or she was born before January 1, 1957, has received two doses of the MMR vaccine or has a lab test confirming immunity. This is New York City Mayor de Blasio announcing the new measures Tuesday. In response, anti-vaccination protesters have begun wearing yellow stars, claiming that rules based on vaccination status are analogous to the inhumane treatment of Jews during the Holocaust.
The city has ceaselessly worked over the past year to raise awareness about Measles vaccinations.

Opponents of the order are trying to block it in court, according to New York City civil attorney Michael Sussman, whose office confirmed that he is involved in legal matters related to the issue.
A lawyer is poised to file a lawsuit challenging the order this week.
In the face of this crisis, schools in Washington and NY are keeping unvaccinated children out of classes, and Rockland County executive Ed May declared that they should be barred from all public places in the county.
A state judge sided with Mr. Sussman and the parents, issuing a preliminary injunction against the county's emergency order.
Authorities will carry out the order by interviewing Williamsburg residents who have been diagnosed with measles and then interviewing everyone who those people have come in contact with.
"'If we catch people early enough, we can give them medication", Kiernan said. Two of the infected children developed pneumonia and had to be hospitalized as a result.
And while the highly contagious respiratory disease has yet to hit Utahns, "we're only one airline flight within a case coming here", said Dr. Tamara Sheffield, medical director for community health and prevention at Intermountain Healthcare.
