House Ways and Means Chairman, Democrat Richard Neal, sets a new deadline for the IRS to turn over President Trump's tax returns. The law states that three people: the House Ways and Means chairman, the head of the Joint Committee on Taxation and the Chairman of Senate Finance can ask for anyone's personal tax information for their committee's use.
After a week, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin - rather than Rettig - told Neal that the returns weren't yet available, as "t$3 he committee's request raises serious issues concerning the constitutional scope of Congressional investigative authority, the legitimacy of the asserted legislative goal, and the constitutional rights of American citizens".
Neal, a Massachusetts Democrat, sent a second letter to the Internal Revenue Service on Saturday, asking for six years of Trump's personal and business returns, citing a section of the tax code that allows the chairman of the tax committees to request the returns of any taxpayer, including the president.
"I am aware that concerns have been raised regarding my request, and the authority of the committee", he wrote in the letter. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin responded by the deadline saying he needed more time to review the request and consult with the Department of Justice.
"If you want to run for vice president or president of the United States, hey, what's wrong with providing your tax returns for the past five years?" said Sen. "Those concerns lack merit".

Despite the law's clarity, Democrats have long acknowledged that the request, if denied, would mean a federal court battle that could ultimately be settled by the U.S. Supreme Court.
But on Saturday, he said the administration would respond by the latest target date.
Mr Neal is the only member of the House of Representatives authorised to request individual tax information under a federal law. Neal asked for Trump's returns a week ago.
William Consovoy, whose firm was retained by Trump to represent him on the matter, has written the Treasury's general counsel and said the congressional request "would set a unsafe precedent" if granted and that the IRS can not legally divulge the information.
On Monday, lawmakers in NY proposed a bill that would allow the commissioner of the state's Department of Taxation and Finance to turn over state tax returns if requested by certain congressional committees.
