The rebuke is in response to concerns from Jewish lawmakers and advocacy groups who accused Omar of anti-Semitism for claiming pro-Israel members of Congress have dual loyalties.
"What I'm fearful of - because Rashida and I are Muslim - that a lot of our Jewish colleagues, a lot of our constituents, a lot of our allies, go to thinking that everything we say about Israel to be anti-Semitic because we are Muslim", Omar said, according to Jewish Insider.
Politico reports that Democratic leaders have been hard at work since last week, trying to figure out a way to openly criticize remarks made by Omar - at an event last week in Washington, D.C. - and by others, who have adopted centuries old anti-Semitic tropes, like the "dual loyalty" smear, to critique their colleagues.
The remarks drew the ire of two senior House Democrats from New York: Appropriations Committee chairwoman Nita Lowey and Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Elliot Engel.
"Anti-Semitism has no place in the United States Congress and I think she should either resign from Congress or she should certainly resign from the House Foreign Affairs Committee", the president said, adding that her comments were "deep-seated in her heart".

But Alexander has declined to say how he would vote on the disapproval resolution. Trump has previously said that he would veto the measure.
Omar's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. "I urge her to retract this statement and engage in further dialogue with the Jewish community on why these comments are so hurtful", Lowey wrote.
American Jews have long faced discrimination based on the sterotype that their first loyalty is to Israel and the expectation that they must prove their patriotism in order to participate in US politics.
"Our democracy is built on debate, Congresswoman! Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the only person that can do this, and it is her responsibility to do this as the head of Omar's party". While not calling for that, Engel's statement seems to suggest that if Omar does not cease with the offensive comments she could eventually be removed from the committee. I find that to be problematic and I am not alone.
The Anti-Defamation League has demanded that House Democrats offer a resolution that makes clear every member of Congress opposes anti-Semitism. The poster appeared to link Omar to the 9/11 attacks, depicting planes flying into the World Trade Center with the phrase "never forget, you said" with a photo of Omar underneath, saying, "I am proof you have forgotten".
She apologized, but affirmed her concerns about the role lobbyists, including the pro-Israel AIPAC, play in the government process.
