Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases with polling in the first phase on 11 April and the last phase on 19 May.
In 2004, the Commission had announced four-phase Lok Sabha polls on February 29. However, there is no clarity yet on whether elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held along with the General election. The elections will be held in single phase. The dates are April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19.
Earlier this month, the leaders of nearly all political parties met an Election Commission team headed by the chief election commissioner and requested for simultaneous polls for both Lok Sabha and the state assembly.
Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said the model code of conduct would come into immediate effect from Sunday and 10 lakhs polling stations would be set up this time as against about nine lakhs in 2014.
Announcing the schedule for 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission said the voter verifiable paper audit trail' (VVPAT) will be used in all polling stations this time.

Asked whether the government did not assure adequate security for simultaneous polls in Jammu and Kashmir, Arora did not said, "The Election Commission can not disregard the recent developments...."
The Commission has directed that the use of public address system or loudspeakers during the entire election period starting from the date of announcement of the election and ending with the date of declaration of results, shall not be permitted at night between 10.00 p.m. and 6.00 a.m.
The other state assemblies and Lok Sabha have five-year terms.
The J&K assembly's six-year term was to end on March 16, 2021, but it got dissolved after the ruling coalition between the PDP and the BJP fell apart.
The required electronic voting machines and paper trail machines are in place to be deployed in almost 10 lakh polling stations across 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. The last date for filing of nominations is March 25.
