The Want to See score on the movie, which features a female superhero, had plummeted to 27 percent with 46,000 votes before Rotten Tomatoes dropped the function. The "Audience Score" percentage, is the percentage of all users who've rated a film or TV show with a positive star rating of 3.5 or higher, and it's only revealed when a film or TV show is released.
Another change is tweaking the way it polls moviegoers about whether or not they want to see a film which has been used as a measure of fan anticipation. Why you might ask? In addition, the "want to see" score - which previously had been represented as a percentage - is now being shown as a raw number tallied in real time in order to eliminate confusion with the "audience score".
"Unfortunately, we have seen an uptick in non-constructive input, sometimes bordering on trolling, which we believe is a disservice to our general readership", the staff explained. While this won't stop online trolls from attacking a film after its release, it (hopefully) could dissuade them from launching mass campaigns beforehand. No longer will fans be able to leave written comments or reviews prior to a movie's release.
Another commenter agreed, stating that they likely wouldn't be visiting Rotten Tomatoes any more because of the new system: "Losing the pre-release comments and the percentage of "Want to see" greatly reduces the value that RT brought".

Following a clear trolling attack on the upcoming Marvel movie, which led to a plummeting "want to see" rating and a comment section filled with sexist vitriol, Rotten Tomatoes is announcing a variety of drastic changes to its movie rating system, some of which have already been rolled out. Through our research department we have learned that our users would prefer a cleaner, less cluttered, presentation of the Tomatometer and Audience Score.
The website said audience ratings and comments once the film or series is released will remain the same as they have been. In the latest TV spot, we get the first look at a Skrull transformation in the film along with plenty of shots of Brie Larson's Captain Marvel in action.
Along with the troll-fighting updates, Rotten Tomatoes has made layout changes to the site. At the very least, trolls with an agenda shouldn't have a major say in that and Rotten Tomatoes is trying to do the right thing.
