The Prime Minister is expected to press the case for the Withdrawal Agreement to be reopened to replace the controversial backstop with alternative arrangements for avoiding a hard border in Ireland after Brexit.
The backstop outlined in the withdrawal agreement would mean the United Kingdom remains in an effective customs union with the EU to prevent border checks at the Northern Irish border after the transition period, unless and until an alternative solution is found.
The EU will not renegotiate the divorce deal and the Irish backstop but alternatives could be worked on after Britain leaves, chief EU negotiator Michel Barnier said on Monday.
