Someone even got a photo of the man, who police have identified as 30-year-old Andrew Clyde Swofford, calmly sitting in Maddie's room after being caught.
"He was in there wearing all of my clothes, my socks, my shoes", she said.
What alarms Maddie and her roommates is that this is not the first time a stranger had been inside their apartment. Except, this was not what she discovered when she checked her closet on Saturday, Feb. 2. Items of her clothing went missing without explanation.
To keep him distracted, Maddie chose to calmly ask the stranger questions while she texted her boyfriend about what was happening.
It happened at the Summit at the Edge Apartments, just steps from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The student said her and her roommate joked about the apartment being haunted by a "ghost".
"We always joke that there's a ghost in here because I've been missing clothes since I've been living here, like shirts - like a shirt at a time or trousers at this time - it makes me think he's been here before".
"He tries on my hat, goes in my bathroom and looks in the mirror". When he returned, he told Maddie: 'You're really pretty, can I give you a hug?'
Maddie and her roommate say they can't take it anymore and are considering moving out.
