Security forces on Monday killed top commander of the Jaish-e-Mohammad, the Pakistan-based group that carried out the suicide bombing in Pulwama on February 14, in an encounter in South Kashmir's in Pinglan area of Pulwama district.
According to reports, one of the vehicles carrying soldiers was completely destroyed in the attack, while five other cars in the convoy of Indian forces were badly damaged.
Indian officials say Umair is a nephew of the chief of the Jaish, Masood Azhar, who is believed to be in Pakistan. Security forces suspect he is in hiding in southern Kashmir, the police officer told Reuters.
Babu said the decision followed a call by the government for a review of security for those "taking money from Pakistan".
The former general, who was in charge of the army's northern command at the frontier with Pakistan in Kashmir and counterinsurgency operations, oversaw India's "surgical strikes" in September 2016 after militants attacked a military base in the frontier town of Uri near the highly militarized Line of Control.
"All the rhetoric of war in the Indian media would do no good, instead it is time for introspection for the Modi government and it must move towards finding a solution of Kashmir by engaging with real stakeholders namely Pakistan and Hurriyat", tweeted Hassan Raza from Pakistan.
"It has no bearing, neither can it change the reality of the lingering Kashmir dispute or the situation on the ground", he said.
Many separatist rebel groups are fighting for the independence of all of Kashmir, while some want the territory to become a part of Pakistan.

Thousands of people, including militants and civilians, have died since the insurgency began in late 1980s.
Government data shows 91 officers lost their lives in Kashmir previous year, about 14 percent more than 2017.
