Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) announced Monday that she will be running for president in 2020. If successful, she'd be the country's second African-American president and the first woman to hold the office.
The daughter of immigrants - her father is from Jamaica - Harris grew up in the 1960s in the progressive hotbed of Oakland, California, proud of the struggle her parents waged for civil rights.
The California Democrat tells ABC's "Good Morning America" that she's entering the increasingly crowded field of candidates seeking the Democratic nomination. "I'm very excited about it".

The 54-year-old portrayed herself as a fighter for justice, decency and equality in a video distributed by her campaign as she announced her bid.
"There's an incredible amount of change that has happened in a relatively short period of time, and it has understandably had a lot of people feeling displaced, wondering and asking a question about where do they fit in, their relevance, are they obsolete", said Harris in an interview with NPR's Morning Edition earlier this month.
Unlike Warren, Gillibrand, or Castro, Harris is not initially forming a presidential exploratory committee, but instead immediately launching a full-scale presidential campaign.
Senators Elizabeth Warren of MA and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY have both launched exploratory committees.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully sought the 2016 Democratic nomination, is also considering a campaign.
