The Chang'e-4 lunar probe, launched in December, made the "soft landing" at 0226 GMT and transmitted the first-ever "close range" image of the dark side of the moon, the China National Space Administration said.
While the far side of the Moon has been photographed since the 1950s, humankind has yet to successfully land there until now. The move marks a step towards China's ambition to become a leading power in space exploration alongside the USA and Russian Federation.
The blast-off marked the start of a long journey to the far side of the moon for the Chang'e-4 mission.
The United States is so far the only country to have landed humans on the moon.
Chang'e 3: First unmanned Moon landing of the Chang'e effort.
Landing on the unexplored region will enable Chang'e-4's rover to better study the moon because of the lack of electromagnetic interference from Earth.

Trump pushes for border wall money as top lawmakers receive briefing
On Tuesday morning, Mr Trump tweeted: "The Democrats, much as I suspected, have allocated no money for a new Wall". Trump could actually make this worse by offering something like a DACA deal and daring Democrats to reject it.
The mission should beam home some intriguing and dramatic imagery as well; Von Kármán Crater lies within the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin, one of the largest impact features in the solar system. Due to the fact that the Moon's period of rotation around Earth and its rotation about its axis are identical, only one hemisphere of the Moon can be observed from Earth at any point.
The probe, which includes a lander and a rover, touched down at a preselected landing area, the official Xinhua news agency said, after it had entered the moon's orbit in mid-December.
In May, a relay satellite "Queqiao, ' or 'Magpie Bridge", named after an ancient Chinese folk tale, was launched to provide communications support between Chang'e 4 and Earth.
Chang'e 4 had touched down on the surface at 10:26 a.m., the China National Space Administration said.
NASA administrators have said people could be put on Mars by as soon as the mid-2030s, with the agency having landed eight spacecraft there, the most recent in November.
No lander or rover has ever touched the surface there, positioning China as the first nation to explore the area. Next year, Chang'e 5 should bring samples back from the moon, also a first since 1976, according to the Associated Press.
