Apple Going Down in PC Market Too as MacBooks Lose Ground

Consumer demand drove the PC industry during the fourth quarter but multiple retailers reported a slowdown in sales after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Lenovo also had a strong quarter in the US and has recorded three consecutive quarters of double-digit year-over-year shipment growth.
Apple remained in the fourth position with market share of 7.2% and year-on-year growth of -3.8%.
It's not the largest drop around, but it once again paints a rather lacklustre picture for the PC market, which past year actually looked like it was picking up a bit after quarters upon quarters of declining shipments. "We expect this demand will be pushed forward into 2019 if CPU availability improves", noted Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst at Gartner.

According to Gartner numbers published today, vendors suffered a year-long decline of 1.3 per cent in shipments to 259.4 million units, and in the final quarter, shipments of 68.6 million units were down 4.3 per cent in what is supposed to be the busiest time of the year for sales. "Our early indicator showed that SOHO and small business buyers held off on some new PC purchases due to uncertainties around the political and economic conditions". Consumer shipments accounted for approximately 40 percent of PC shipments in 2018 compared with 49 percent in 2014.
New data from IDC and Gartner has revealed that the United States trade war with China and processor shortages have had a significant impact of PC sales at a time when the PC market appeared to be recovering.
ZDNet, on the other hand, lays the blame on the ongoing trade war between the USA and China. Dell is third with 10.9 million units sold and 15.9% share, while Apple is only fourth, and far behind the top three, with just 4.9 million units shipped during the quarter and a share of just 7.2%, more than half of Dell. The top four firms are the same as Gartner, and Acer replaces Asus in fifth spot. Finally, at Acer, shipments dropped 18.3 percent to 3.861 million, while its market share fell to 5.6 percent form 6.6 percent.
