In a befuddling series of tweets Friday, President Trump appeared to threaten both the Democrats and US trade relations with Mexico when he suggested he would close the southern border. The President has requested $5 billion to pay for the wall.
"We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with".
According to a report earlier this month by CBS News, about $558 million in goods flowed across the border in both directions a year ago. "The president does not want the government to remain shut down, but he will not sign a proposal that does not first prioritize our country's safety and security".
"There's not a single Democrat talking to the president of the United States about this deal", he said, admitting that the White House expected the shutdown "to go on for a while". Mostly, the Democratic aides declined to take the blame-game bait being dangled by the White House.
Democrats brushed off the White House's attempt to cast blame.
"We don't think they will [negotiate] until after the new Congress is sworn in", he said.

The Iraqi prime minister recently said Iraqi troops could deploy into Syria to protect Iraq from threats across its borders. He landed the next day at the Al Asad air base, where military personnel greeted him at a hall decorated for Christmas.
In the new Congress, Senate Republicans will increase their number of seats to 53 but still will need Democratic support to pass any legislation requiring a 60-vote majority.
It's looking increasingly as if the partial government shutdown will be handed off to a divided government to solve.
The House and Senate adjourned Thursday after brief pro forma sessions and made plans to reconvene Monday, signaling that the partial shutdown will last through the new year.
"Call it anything", he added, "barrier, fence, I won't say the "w" word". It was unclear how Trump's threat to close the border would affect his efforts to ratify an amended North American free trade pact.
He then said the US would terminate aid with Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, which he said are doing "nothing for the United States but taking our money", and referred to the caravans of migrants moving through those countries toward the U.S.
He has also repeatedly threatened to cut off US aid to countries he deems insufficient partners in combating illegal immigration, but has thus far failed to follow through with those threats.
