In Northern California, the Camp Fire advanced rapidly to the outskirts of the city of Chico early on Friday, forcing thousands to flee after it left the nearby town of Paradise in ruins, California fire officials said.
Earlier in the day, Butte County officials announced five people who were fleeing the blaze had perished after the flames torched cars they were riding in.
Officials have recovered the remains of five people from vehicles that were "overcome by" the raging fire in Butte County, the sheriff's department there announced on Friday morning.
Strong blustery winds combined with dry conditions have helped the blaze spread, after weeks without rain and low humidity at the height of the wildfire season in north California. The town of about 26,000 people lost all power Thursday as the violent blaze knocked out power lines; Pacific Gas and Electric Co.de-energized some lines as a precaution, reportedly at the request of firefighters, a spokesperson said late Thursday morning.
The town of Paradise, California, which has about 27,000 people, was asked to evacuate the area.
About two-thirds of the city of Malibu was ordered evacuated early Friday as a ferocious wildfire roared toward the beachside community that is home to about 13,000 residents, some of them Hollywood celebrities.
Cal Fire's Bill Murphy says winds have calmed down in the valley but that there are "shifting, erratic winds" with speeds of up to 45mph (72 km/h) along ridge tops.

Malibu residents ordered out as California wildfire nears

Fire officials have also issued evacuation notices for parts of Chico, a town of 93,000 people north of Sacramento.

On the outskirts of town, Patrick Knuthson, a fourth-generation resident, said only two of the 22 homes that once stood on his street are still there - his and a neighbor's. Firefighters were able to stop the flames at the edge of the city, where evacuation orders remained in place Friday, said Cal Fire Cpt. "This is a very risky wind-driven fire".

Actress Alyssa Milano, one of Kardashian's neighbours in Calabasas, wrote on Twitter that she was also evacuated.
Her husband, the rapper Kanye West, said their family was "safe".
Typically, for Los Angeles at least, the serious headlines are interspersed with others reporting that the mansion from the television series The Bachelor is burning, or that the homes of former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner and pop icon Cher, are at risk.
